Advantages to Using a Fitness Tracker

Curious about how many steps you walk in a day or how far it is from your parked car to the front door at work?  Wrist-worn activity trackers can give you information like this and some models can offer you biometric specifics like heart rate and caloric burn.  There are many reasons you may consider investing in a fitness tracker:

  • Accountability – you are more committed to get your activity in when you have a tracking device.  Some offer a feature that will nudge you if you haven’t moved enough for the day.
  • Goal-setting – daily movement goals can be visualized for encouragement and satisfaction.
  • Motivation – visually seeing your progress each day is encourages you to improve for the next day, week, or month.
  • Tracks sleep – many trackers offer the ability to track your sleep pattern, how deeply or lightly you sleep, duration of sleep and each time you woke up.
  • Monitors heart rate – most fitness trackers have the ability to monitor your heart rate by measuring your pulse.  This information allows you to reach your target heart rate within each workout and observe improvements in cardiovascular fitness over time.
  • Stay connected – some trackers include WiFi and Bluetooth which allows you to receive text messages, emails and/or phone calls without pulling out your phone.  You can even find a device that stores and plays music through wireless headphones.
  • Versatility – select devices can track a wide range of activities like paddle boarding, swimming, hiking, climbing and cycling just to name a few.

Get ready for the Fall into Fitness Challenge from October 11th to November 8th with a new, discounted activity device that will track your activity and connect to your N Good Health account.  Get the latest in smart technology with discounts up to 40% off retail on select devices at the online store found at:   NGoodHealth.com, click on “Get Your Fitness Device” and then follow the steps to begin shopping for a discounted Garmin or Fitbit device.  Be sure to connect your device to your N Good Health account so you can monitor your progress and receive one healthy action point for each day you complete 7500 steps or more and be connected for the Fall into Fitness Challenge.

N Good Health Success Story Spotlight: Clinical Effectiveness Team

N Good Health is designed to help you improve or maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle. Over the past several years, employees from all over the organization have used the program to help make their health a priority. These individuals come from various backgrounds and stages in their wellness journeys, but the N Good Health team is always in awe of the dedication they show.  Recently, we received an email with an awesome story and we are so excited to share with you today.

This email is from Chandra Weathers, Director of Clinical Effectiveness:

I just wanted to share this in hopes that it may inspire other departments. The Clinical Effectiveness Department moved from Medical Towers South to the Fenley Office Suites in November 2020. When we were downtown our offices were in closer proximity and we ate lunch together in the break room (pre-COVID), so we saw each other all the time. However, when we moved we acquired more space and the offices are more spread out. Often you would hear people say, “I haven’t seen you in a while” or “I never see you since our offices aren’t next to each other anymore.” Long story short 🙂 – the last steps challenge inspired me to create a mid-day walking group. It was win-win because we were able to safely reconnect outside and get our steps in. I advertised it to the team, put a recurring meeting invite on everyone’s calendar (that expressed interest) and we walked everyday as long as the weather was good. We talked about work and it also allowed us to get to know the new team members better. We even changed up the route often to keep it interesting. As a result of the positive feedback, the Clinical Effectiveness team now has a CE Connection Walk on everyone’s calendar every Friday morning.

Do YOU have a story to share?  Please send your wellness success stories to N Good Health by reaching out to Lacey Nelson at [email protected] with the subject line “Success Story”. You never know who may hear your story and get inspired to make their health a priority!

Stairwell workout!

Use these games to have more fun during a stairwell workout at work! Some function as a solo game, others need a partner.

Alphabet game:

  • Start and stop as much as needed. May even take you the week! Go through the alphabet and say a word out loud that starts with each letter, one for every flight.
    • Example: flight 1 – apple, flight 2 – bear, and so on.
    • Can you remember everything you said?!

State game:

  • Start and stop as much as needed. May even take you the month! Go through and name each state, one per flight.
    • Example: flight 1 – Texas, flight 2 – Kentucky, and so on.
    • Hope you have a good memory!

Mix it up:

  • Don’t just walk up the stairs, try
    • Double stairs
    • Side steps
    • Quick feet
    • Step side to side to make a wider step
    • “step aerobics style” where you just walk up and back down or jump up and step back down on one stair

Word game:

  • First person starts with a word. Example: Tomato.
  • Next person has to think of a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. Example: Octopus. And so on.
  • You could event theme it. Examples: animals only!
  • Want to make it hard? Race. Can your partner get to the top of the flight before you can think of another word?!

Partner workout:

  • Person 1 goes up a set amount of flights and back down while person 2 is at the bottom doing one of the following while waiting. Hurry! Your partner is going to get tired!
    • Marching in place
    • Jumping jacks
    • Wall push-ups
    • Squats
    • Wall sits
    • Wall plank
  • Switch places!
